San Diego Smooth Dancers (SDSD) is the local chapter of National Smooth Dancers(NSD), a California ballroom dance organization
established in 1937. SDSD is a non-profit corporation that supports and encourages both social and competitive partner dancing.
There are nine NSD chapters in California, and San Diego has been an active NSD Chapter since 1949.
CLUB-SPONSORED SOCIAL EVENTS
Theme dance parties are held regularly, usually on the first Saturday of each month. We find many ways to celebrate in dance. We
enjoy American Apple Pie picnics, romance our Valentines, parade our Easter Bonnets, honor the spirit of giving at Christmas, and
celebrate other festive occasions throughout the year. SDSD dance socials feature contests, entertainment and many surprises. SDSD
dance events are open to the public, $7 donation per person for regular socials; special pricing and advance reservations apply to
dinner dances and certain gala events.
All SDSD dance socials and dance classes are held at Champion Ballroom, 3580 Fifth Avenue, San Diego, CA. Come and enjoy
dancing with us in this friendly and spacious environment. Champion's outstanding facility is well known throughout the Southern
California dance community for being large, comfortable, air conditioned in the summer, conveniently located, and equipped with a
truly great floor for ballroom dancing.
THE DANCE CLASS
Dance classes sponsored by SDSD are held each Sunday evening at Champion Ballroom. A wide variety of classes are offered.
Classes are designed for strong intermediate level dancers who are accustomed to ballroom choreography with silver and gold
patterns. Offerings include American style smooth and rhythm dances, and International Standard and Latin dances. Most dances are
taught for 2 months (approximately 8 weeks). Classes in each new dance are closed to newcomers after the second week. Bring a
partner if you can, but it's not mandatory. A weekly technique class is offered to assist each student in becoming a more competent and
skilled dancer. Scott Dodson, F.I.S.T.D.B.B., is our instructor for the 12th year. He is a top professional instructor, accredited by the
Imperial Society with their highest teaching credential.
Dance class members can expect to have opportunities to demonstrate their achievements in showcase events and competitions.
Please check our schedule of dance classes elsewhere on this web page..
The annual NSD Convention is Labor Day Weekend. Sanctioned competitions are offered for all levels and styles; membership is
required. Each chapter hosts the convention in their home town on a rotating basis.
NSD's convention hosting chapter will be San Diego in 2002. The State Board of Director's Dance Weekend is a mini-convention-style weekend held in Bakersfield each Spring.
Competitions and professional entertainment are among the attractions.
